Rumour: Final Fantasy Versus XIII is Secretly Cancelled!!!

Kotaku is claiming, from “multiple sources” that Final Fantasy Versus XIII is cancelled.

Apparently the game was officially cancelled within the “last few weeks” and the decision has impacted morale at the developers Square Enix. Indeed, the rumour states that the game will be left to “die quietly on the vine and fade away” rather than getting an official cancellation announcement.

The game has only ever been seen in the form of occasional trailers and screenshots, despite being announced six years ago.

The same site suggests that the development and resources behind Versus XIII have been “folded into another game” – Final Fantasy XV, although it’s not clear what this actually entails.

“Whether it’s been cancelled entirely or had resources absorbed into a newer, larger project, the game we once knew as Final Fantasy Versus XIII would seem to be no more,” says Kotaku.

“We have no information on the status of Final Fantasy Versus XIII, but will be sure to update you as it becomes available,” is the current official line from Square Enix.

And I HOPE it's just a rumour!

It was seen in more than trailers and screenshots that I recall.... They've casted japanese voice actors and done a battle system trailer for various stages of the game... It was also shown at certain game shows - mostly in japan - they even showcased the official new clothing for Noctis at one of them at the beginning of 2011. SO.... I doubt it's cancelled. I've seen the remade trailers with the official KH style gameplay, the voice acting and the redone scenes. It might be more delayed than usual; but I highly doubt it's cancelled. If it is... There's going to be a LOT of angry people..

They can't cancel it without announcing.

If they did decide to cancel, but not announce it the information would still "get out" in a big way because of staff suddenly without jobs, and the fact they would have to pull out of any business deals surrounding the game. Whether or not they say it officially has no effect on the actual outcome. They gain nothing for not saying so, and may instead have their reputation damaged.

At this point cancelling is only a reasonable business decision if they don't have sufficient funds to complete it as well as all the other projects they have on the go. Even then it might just get back benched (officially this time), and released in time for a big anniversary of the franchise, or something like that.

These rumours could however be indicative of them announcing cancellation in the upcoming months officially. Which wouldn't surprise me. If they haven't been updating it as they go It's now going to be (in the overall video games world) outdated enough in both tech, and game structure (e.g. Battle systems) that it is from a time and financial investment point of view just not worth the effort involved in finishing it for the potential profit it will get from its now smaller (due to how long its been) fan following.

The majority of new (and a lot of current) FF fans are now used to FFXIII which is a entirely new style of game in comparison to the old ones. If FFXIII Verses is following the old structure then it is no longer "progress" in the direction the franchise is taking. Another good reason from a business standpoint to pack it in and leave it where it is.

Still rumours are just rumours. Best to wait and see. It could be prophetic of cancellation, or a plan to up hype about it in time for a Christmas release. You never know you might get your game yet. =)

Just responding to your comments about the battle system: I've seen the footage. The battle system is open world KH style with the possibility of climbing into mechs, knocking stuff over, etc. So the way I see it, a battle system like that for FF is pretty advanced. The graphics are done by the FF team, but the battle system was entirely built by the KH team. Regardless of when/if it's released; it'll be an entirely new chapter in the FF battle system saga.

On another note; I know SE isn't really a fan of releasing things at E3 here in America. Despite all these rumors flying around that v13 is cancelled, there's another rumor most people aren't aware of: Toyko Game Show (TGS) this is year Sept 20-23. There is a rumor that SE will give the official release date of v13 then.

So it's not so much more "advanced" as it is just different.

It sounds like when it does turn up its going to be a game created from a project attitude of lots of brain storming and guys going: "Hey you know all that work we did? Well lets do this instead! It will be so cool!". "Hell Yeah! I'm sure they won't mind waiting a bit longer....". (which would explain the constant delays.) Which could make for a great game experience, or a right shambles.

That's If they have finished it yet. After all there has been plenty of rumours like that before, but here's to hoping they are finally willing to give up the goods concerning their little project baby.

The delays between 2010 and 2011 were redesigning Noctis' costume and casting voice actors. I understand the redesign and I like it better; however, they basically had to redo everything with the new outfit. I heard the old outfit will be an option though. They announced in May that news is coming soon.

Honestly, I'm thinking the release of KH3D was to die down v13 news; seeing as the battle system team for v13 was working on KH3D... I'm honestly thinking it's part of a diversion.

I did look into it though, and it is confirmed that they're doing a couple announcements at TGS regarding FNC.... I'm hoping it's an official jap release date for v13 and an official release date for international Type 0.... I did hear mention of Lightning though and I'm kinda dreading a 13-3 announcement... x.x; Here's hoping it's directed at v13. xD

I will just die inside if this is true. I don't think Square realise that the future of Final Fantasy, in the eyes of many of their most faithful fans, rests on the outcome of this game.

On the Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu, Nomura announced that the game will be a mix between real-time cutscenes and pre-rendered cutscenes with a ratio of 7:3 (70% real-time and 30% pre-rendered). He also stated that the next time the game will be shown, there will be a demonstration using real time footage. Nomura also says that working on Final Fantasy Versus XIII takes priority, in response to fans' requests for a Final Fantasy VII remake.[17]

I also heard that it will feature at TGS this year, all these conflicting rumours!! I just want to know whether to keep waiting or to just give up on final fantasy completely.

The head of Square Enix, Yoichi Wada, squashed rumors today that Final Fantasy Versus XIII has been cancelled.

The rumor mill had been abuzz over the past few days that the latest game in the Fabula Nova Crystallis Final Fantasy series had been canned. The head of Square Enix denied these rumors earlier today.

Posting on Twitter, Yoicha Wada said: "There's someone making a false rumor that Versus was cancelled. Haha...Just a minute ago, the regular Versus meeting ended. The presentation of the city knocked me off my feet~lol".

Final Fantasy Versus XIII does not have a release date yet.

I bet they will release FF XIV v2, FF13-3 and a new Final Fantasy faster than FF-Versus.

It's already been confirmed that it isn't cancelled. That was just a rumor.

So it wil release (hopefully) soon?! Does anybody know something about it? :D

End of fall of '12 - sometime in '13 is the best guess I can make from everything I've heard. They really aren't saying much about a release date so far.

There's supposed to be some Final Fantasy 'event' in september that will focus on Fabula Nova Crystallis, so it's very likely we'll hear something there. If it's just XIII-3 then I will be really mad. Seriously, who even wanted XIII-2 before they heard about it? No-one was expecting a sequel and they've just posponed Versus over and over, and XIII-3 is just getting ridiculous. But yes, it's likely that we'll see something there and possibly at TGS. Nomura said recently that they were almost ready to present the latest information about the game.

OMG thank god! (^.^) I really tought they will never release this game. I mean in the last Trailer Stella hasn't a voice either so I thought they will never finish it. FFXIII and FFXIII-2 was released so fast so I thought they will concentrate on this Game. But thank God they will hopefully release it 2013. :)
Do you think we could play Stella as well because in the last Trailer there we're just Noc and the others to play.
