Chroma Key?
I've heard many places that you can use chroma key like masking. I've even seen some examples of it. But I don't get it at all...
Do you HAVE to have a green screen to use chroma key for that?
Does that mean you can't use it in editing (like with FF or KH)?
I am really confused about this...
Becuase I've seen KH/FF videos where people masked, except it looked different, and I really thought they were using chroma key for that..
I don't know. I"m probably sounding very dumb right now. I am still clueless though about some things in Sony Vegas.
And if there actually is a way to do this, a tutorial would be GREAT.
EDITTTT!!!!!:
ANY tutorials on Chroma Key OR Masking would be just AWSOME, becuase right now I'm not really getting the touch of masking.

Re: Chroma Key?
I don't know of a specific tutorial, but maybe I can clear things up a bit with the definitions of masking and chroma keying!
Chroma-Keying: All chroma-keying is, is you telling the effect what colour you want to be taken out. For example, you add the chroma key effect to a clip (KH, FF, it doesn't matter) and you select the colour blue. Now, all of the blue pixels in the clip will be made transparent, so if you have a layer underneith the clip (like a different background) the background will show through where the blue pixels were taken away. The reason green-screens work best is because there is one solid green colour, and then the person. Since the green is so solid and together, it is easy to cancel out that one colour, and have the person still show through. Obviously, green-screening only works when you use real people. So chroma-keying footage like KH or FF is much more complicated, because of all the different colours within the scenes. If you can find a scene that has one large chunk of colour (like a blue sky) then it is a little easier to get rid of that chunk. Either way, chroma-keying is far from perfect, and I never reccomend using it for footage without a green-screen. Some people "mask" with it, but that cannot be truly called "masking" because "masking" means something else.
Masking: Masking is a process by which you draw an outline via a series of points called anchors around a person in a scene. You are essentially cutting this person out of their background. Masking is a much cleaner and more efficiant way to take someone (or something) and place it somewhere new. It is a lot of work, and takes a lot of patience and practise to get it looking believable, but that is what I reccomend when you cannot chroma-key. Masking allows for fine-tuning and more precise cut-outs of the person or thing.
I hope this helps...Im sure you knew what the terms meant, but yah...xD Ill just be quiet now. Let me know if I completely misunderstood you, and I will try to find a tutorial for you on what you are looking for.
;)

Re: Chroma Key?
Thankyou very much!
I was a bit fuzzy on what you actually DID with Chroma key. Thankyou! =D
Any tutorials you could provide will be very much appreciated.
Right now, I"m terrible at masking, but hopefully I will get better soon. ^^

Re: Chroma Key?
You just need tons of practicing with masking (: I never thought I'd ever be good at masking til I kept doing it and heey i improved!
Re: Chroma Key?
Well, yeah Nii you REALLY improved. O.O
Your newest Nami vid?
I went "HOLY CRAP!" when I saw how good you'd gotten with masking!

Re: Chroma Key?
haha and that took hours D: I'm surprised I didn't lose an arm lol since I masked like every keyframe
Re: Chroma Key?
I have a question for masking. :)
When the character or whatever you've masked moves, whens the best time to put the next point in the timeline to neaten up. I do it as it changes on the timeline but that seems to be too soon and it moves before the character does. I move it a little ahead and it's too late. :S
Just wondering if I'm missing something. (hope my explanation made sense XD)

Re: Chroma Key?
When I had my Pro trial, I always did it keyframe by keyframe and moved what needed to move. It seemed to work well for me and everything was timed perfectly.
As for Rose, I use chroma keyer all the time (I have to when I want to achieve that masking-look, since I only use Platinum), and I guess I'm becoming pro with it, hahaha. I can't provide a watch-now tutorial, but I'll do my best to explain.
When you apply chroma keyer to a clip, uncheck it on the effects popup, so that you can't see the effect. Then, use the button kind of shaped like a pen, so you can go into the clip and take a specific color without having to bother with finding it on your own. Then check the effect again and use the blur so it's not entirely pixel-y. Then you can use the other two bars to take away or add color back in more specificaly. If you just mess around with it for a little bit, you'll get the hang of it! (:

Sounds like your frame rate for the project is different to the frame rate of your footage. Check the frame rate of your footage (You can do this in vegas by right clicking on the clip you want to mask and select properties) and change the project's frame rate to match the footage's under File> Properties > Project Settings.
For example, Advent Children is 29fps whereas Final Fantasy 8 footage is at 15fps.
Re: Chroma Key?
Thankyou all so much! Your answers have really helped me out.
I've completely figured out chroma key now! ^^
As for masking....
I'm going to try what xSeeraai said, and I really hope it works. Thanks so much!! xD
